A while back my children and I took a road trip
passing through Arizona where we saw an owl who had been
hit by a car but was still alive by the side of the road. Being who we
are(trained wild animal transporters here in San Diego County), we stopped and
picked it up and (there were no cell phones at the time) started the search for
a town, then for a phone, then for a person who would nurse this bird
back to health and release him in his own environment. It
should not have taken sooooo long. Most the people in the town didn't even
know such people existed. The very reluctant park ranger we finally
pulled away from his dinner table had to make 3 phone calls to find out if there was
such a group in order to find out who to call. He was amazed to learn
that we were right and someone would come get the bird right away.
We know the owl was okay because we checked him out before
leaving him for the rescuer.
Now, with cell
phones and the internet available, all those people should have been on the
WildAnimals.me site. They should have sites like:
Birds_Phoenix.WildAnimals.me or Owls_Phoenix.WildAnimals.me or at
least be on the list of rescuers with a phone number. They don't
have to to have a computer or want one. I can put an auto responce
on their email address that says, "Please call (123)456-7890 if you
have an injured or abandoned owl in the Phoenix area." Or
they can have everything forwarded to their regular email site.
As far as the networking goes, yes
this could be a GREAT advantage and help to people. We will put in a
blog so people talk to each other as soon as I have people signing
up. There are tons of questions when you are a wild animal care
taker. You run into strange things and someone else may have already
seen it. Most care takers take care of the broken bones and
even major wounds themselves. But the new cares takers may need
reassurance that it's okay to do it or to even try or they could need to put a
picture from their phone on the net and see if anyone else has seen
"This".
Wild Animal rescuers and cares takers are listed for FREE.
Just send us pictures of some of the animals you have saved and
hours you are available for the animals. If you are in a group or
have a supervisor please give us that information too.
